Betty Jean Elmore May, age 87, died Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Peak Resources in Shelby. Born in Cleveland County on July 3, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Dee and Lottie Mae Newton Elmore. Betty and her husband Avery were two of the original thirteen founding members of the Shelby Church of Christ. She had a home daycare for a number of years so she could be a "stay at home mom" with her children. In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Avery May; and three sisters, Alice Ware, Geraldine Hanna, and Lucille Humphries.

Betty is survived by a son, Dean May and wife Tamara of Waxhaw; a daughter, Vickie Monteith and husband David of Charlotte; two brothers, Ron Elmore and wife Kathy of Shelby and Don Elmore and wife Gale of Waco; and five grandsons, Scout Monteith, Denver Monteith, Trevor May, Parker May and Caleb May.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 3:00 pm at the Shelby Church of Christ with Pastor Terry Graves officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour before the service from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm in the sanctuary.
