Boiling Springs Third Graders Collecting Pennies for Classmate
Boiling Springs Elementary School’s third grade classmates of Asher Smith show off some of the 90,000 pennies they have already collected.
Angela Ramsey is a third grade teacher at Boiling Springs Elementary School and is proud of her students’ reading skills. One day, they read an article entitled “Pennies For Your Health-Saving For A Cause!”, and that was the beginning of this worthwhile project. The students wanted to, somehow, help Asher Smith, a beloved classmate who was diagnosed with a form of Leukemia. His classmates started to talk about the article they had just read and thought they could help by raising some money to help pay his medical bills. Soon, it was all about pennies! They set a goal of collecting a million pennies ($10,000). In less than two months they had collected 90,000 pennies. The students are constantly asking everyone in school, civic clubs, local businesses, churches and individuals to please help them achieve their goal. They are counting on you and need your help. They want to see Asher in remission and back in their class. Mrs. Ramsey is all for it and very committed. She told us that if you called the school (704-476-8361) she would make arrangements to come by and pick up your pennies. You are also welcome to come by the school and leave your contributions. If it’s more convenient, you can go by Fidelity Bank located at 331 S. Lafayette St. in Shelby and see Matt Triplett to give him your contribution. He is in charge of the “Pennies For Asher” account. How soon can they get a million pennies? They want to do it by June! Just think, a class of 15 third graders believe, for sure, that they can get to a million pennies for their classmate and friend, Asher Smith. Special thanks to our Photo Director: Classmate Ben.
