Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County 2015 Annual Awards Banquet held

The Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County held its Annual Awards Banquet and program at the Baccus Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Shelby on Friday Evening, April 24. Board President Jack Weller was Master of Ceremonies for the evening which honored many of last year's volunteers, supporters and participants in the Club's programs. Presenters and assistants for the evening were Jack Weller, Board Members Faye Burton and Bob Chadwick, Boys & Girls Club Program Director Mary Pass, Club Staff Keeynan Pharr, Jeannine Streeper, Volunteer Participant Tyler Perez and the Club Executive Director Joshua Propst.

Volunteer Service Awards
Individuals who volunteered their time to coach or mentor youngsters at the Club were: Maurice Corry, Tiana Littlejohn, Craig Macopson, Patrina Mauney, Perry Smith
Coaches Award For Youth Basketball Players
The following youngsters were recognized by their coaches for their efforts in the youth basketball program: I'Keria Haynes, Trey Jolly, Zachary Propst, Damajae Rhodes, Johnashia Waldrop, Jaqurion French, Chris Daniels, Bre-Lasia Lowe, Jahiem Butler.
Youth of the Year Award
The Youth of the Year Award was presented to six year Club member, Tori Owens. Tori is presently a junior at Shelby High School. She has a 4.2 GPA and her favorite subject is History. She attends Bethel Baptist Church and is involved in the youth group and youth choir. Last summer she volunteered in the Club's Summer Day Camp Program in the Teen Camper Leadership Program. She is presently a Junior Staff Member at the Club working as a Peer Helper in the Power Hour Homework Help Program. Tori is the daughter of Michael and Cynthia Owens. The presentation of her award included a plaque to honor her achievement and a $100 gift certificate from the Boys & Girls Club's Board of Directors.
Junior Youth of the Year Award
The Junior Youth of the Year Award was presented to three year Club member Keshon Robinson who has been active in both the After-School Program and the Jack & Ruth Schweppe Summer Day Camp Program. Keshon is a seventh grade at Shelby Middle School where he is on the A/B Honor Roll. Last year, Keshon received the "Coaches Award" for his ongoing assistance with basketball program and the concessions stand. Keshon received a plaque to honor his achievement and a $50 gift certificate from the Boys & Girls Club's Board of Directors.
Volunteer of the Year Award
Dr. Rich Berkowitz, Carolina Chiropractic Plus, was recognized for his sustained support of the Club and for chairing the Annual Golf Tournament.
Executive Directors Award
Speed Williams, community volunteer, was recognized for his more than twenty years of service on the Board of Directors.
Outstanding Service To Youth Award
Betty Camp, Joanna Perez
Board Member of the Year Award
Bill Chambless, Carolina Commercial Properties, was recognized for his work in fundraising and serving a vice president of the Board of Directors.
Club Emissary Award
Susan Allen, Cleveland County Commissioner, was recognized for sustained support of the Club over the years. She has chaired Murder Mystery fundraisers, been an advocate for the Teen Center.
Youth Partnership Awards

Good Neighbor Awards
Two organizations that support the Club's work in helping those children who need help the most were
The Salvation Army of Shelby- The Salvation Army was honored and thanked for regularly sharing healthy snacks and providing delivery of food pantry items to the Club helping to feed more than 80 students per day.
Cleveland Memorial Library- The Cleveland County Library System has been a tremendous supporter of youth and families that attend the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County. The library system has brought many opportunities to club members such as the first ever "Skype with a New York Times Best Selling Author- Live from New York City", participation in the annual summer reading program that showcased STEM curriculum hands on experiences, weekly LEGO Building events, professional theater make-up workshops and even a chance to meet and address nationally known Science Fiction Authors at the Don Gibson Theatre. The Boys & Girls Club is particularly proud a partnership providing the engaging STEM after-school events presented by Kid Senses Interactive Children's Museum. The programs were made possible by a generous grant from the Dover Foundation of Cleveland County.
Man-Youth Award
Greg McIntyre, McIntyre Elder Law Firm, was recognized for his continued commitment and support of youngsters. McIntyre coached a Boys & Girls Club soccer team in the Greater Cleveland County Soccer Association League and was an advocate for the Club in the community.
Woman-Youth Award
Mary Pass, program director, Boys & Girls Club, was recognized for her work with the youngsters, high school and college volunteers, parents, and community volunteers to provide a fun, safe, atmosphere at the Club each day.
Presidents Award
Gardner Webb University Men's Basketball Team for their community commitment efforts. Members of the team mentored youngsters at the Club and students were able to participate in a practice session at the start of the season under Coach Tim Craft.
Foster Grandparent Award
Betty Brewton, Betty Camp, Gladys Hardy, Ethel Shell, Edna Wright
Teen Camper Leadership Award
The Teen Camper Leadership Award was presented to Mahogony Foster. Mahogony has a 4.5 GPA at Crest High School. She also plays three sports (Volleyball, Softball, and Basketball). She enjoys running, bowling, and snow tubing. She is an active participant in the youth group at Bethel Baptist Church and has plans to one day become a missionary. Her award included a plaque to honor his achievement and a $50 gift certificate from the Boys & Girls Club's Board of Directors.
Jim Taylor Honor Day Camper Award
The Club recognized Jim Taylor, community volunteer for his long time support of the Club, a past Board president and the co-chairman of the first capital campaign in 1968-1970. Through his efforts the first building was built to serve boys in the community.
Jim Taylor Honor Day Camper Award
The youth recipient of the "Jim Taylor Award" was two year Club member Iyanna Baccus. Iyanna is two year member of the Boys & Girls Club. She is a second grader at Washington Elementary School where she is on the A Honor Roll and has perfect attendance. Despite having five older brothers, she still manages to present herself as a well-mannered, respectful and loving child. She has been an active participant in the both the After-School Program and the Jack and Ruth Schweppe Summer Day Camp Program. She enjoys dancing, playing with other children and making new friends. Tonight she is receiving a plaque honoring her achievement and also a $50 gift card from the Boys & Girls Club's Board of Directors. Iyanna received a plaque honoring her achievement and a $50 gift certificate from the Boys & Girls Club's Board of Directors.
