Charles Meekins Scotland

Charles Meekins Scotland, age 79 died Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Buncombe County on October 29, 1936, he was the son of the late William Charles Meekins and Marcia Katherine Chapin Meekins. He was the grandson of U.S. District Court Judge Issac M. Meekins and Lena Purefoy Allen and Frederick Emmons Chapin and Mary Rebecca Louise Libbey. He is survived by his brother, William Charles Meekins and his brother Frederick Chapin Meekins and his wife, Doris Rich Meekins along with several nieces and nephews and their families.

Charles was an actor and artist who received his education at Choate School in Wallingford, CT, Washington and Lee University, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a member and actively involved in the Actors Equity Association and was honored to tour the United States as Benjamin Franklin under contract with the National Park Service, Bicentennial Project Committee chaired by Chief Justice Berger. He thoroughly enjoyed his 11 years as a teacher and Cartoonist In Residence at the Dalton School in New York City. Charles served as a Crier and Baliff for the U.S. Court of Appeals from 1952 to 1955 working directly with Justice Parker who served as an Officer and Judge for the Nuremburg trials. He performed in several films for the Screen Actors Guild and was house manager for the Broadway show, Driving Miss Daisy, during its long run on Broadway. He was a resident of Manhattan Plaza, a professional residency for actors and artists located in New York City for 28 years.

The family of Charles Meekins Scotland will have a private memorial celebration of life service on Friday, June 17, 2016 and any memorials can be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, North Carolina at 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.
