Charles Richard "Dick" Blackwelder
Charles Richard "Dick" Blackwelder, age 86 of Meadowbrook Lane, passed away Monday, January 8, 2018 at Testa Family Hospice House. He was born December 25, 1931 in Gaston County to the late John William and Ocie Witherspoon Blackwelder. He was a former machinist at Blackwelder Machine Shop and a member of First Presbyterian Church. Dick was a Korean War Veteran of the United States Navy and a member of Cherryville American Legion Post #100. He was a member of the Cherryville New Year's Shooters and enjoyed reading. Dick was a people person and loved socializing with friends and family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Catherine "Leigh" Young; brothers, Pete, Buck, and Jab Blackwelder; and sisters, Ruth McGinnis, Mary Sue "Cooter" Blackwelder, and Tuck Randall.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Betty Hunt Blackwelder; grandchildren, Allison Matthews and husband, Trey of Mount Juliet, TN and Brian Young and wife, Kim of Nashville, TN; son-in-law, Tim Young of Hillsborough; great grandson, Jackson Matthews; and numerous devoted, loving, and faithful nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 12, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Carpenter-Porter Funeral & Cremation Services with Rev. Dr. Bill Lowe officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 12:30 to 1:45 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
