Dairy Queen Celebrates 75 Years With Free Ice Cream!

On Monday, March 16th, free ice cream cones of vanilla, chocolate or swirl were offered at Shelby's famous Dairy Queen. To celebrate DQ's 75th Anniversary, everyone that could fit in the restaurant came to join the celebration and get their free cone. The guesstimate, for the all day event, was there would be at least 3600 or more cones given away. The first Dairy Queen opened in Joliet, Illinois in 1940. In 1951 Banana Splits appeared on DQ's menu and in 1985 more than 175 million Blizzard Treats were sold in its first year.

Students from Shelby High were enjoying their free cones of ice cream during DQ's 75th Anniversary celebration. Pictured (l to r) are Victoria Hunter, Nancy Bridges, Davis Kennedy, and Atticus Woodward. Also pictured is seven year old Eva licking her swirled treat. She was with her parents at the Dairy Queen event.
