Dean Haskell Broome


Blacksburg - Dean Haskell Broome, son of the late Florence Mull Broome and James Hilliard Broome Sr., was also raised in part by his late aunts and uncles, Delitha and Leonard Broome and Cora and Henry Broome. He was born March 13, 1928, in Charlotte, N.C., and died May 24, 2017 at Brookview Nursing Home in Gaffney, S.C.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Betty Elmore Broome; three children, Marilyn Reynolds (Ed), Jeffrey Broome (Angela), and Edwin Broome (Leslie);, six grandchildren, Susan Broome Kesterson (Randy), Justin Broome (Mandy), Molly Knight, Jesse Broome (Renee), Jamie Broome Brown (Wesley), and Jared Broome; nine great-grandchildren, Chase Kesterson, Carson Brown, Helen Broome, Waylon Broome, Caroline Brown, Harper Broome, Bette Broome, Ruby James Brown, and Townsley Broome; sisters Betty Peterson Broome and Ila Jean Peeler, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Thelma Broome Page , James Hilliard Broome Jr., Rose Broome Patterson, George Broome, Billy Broome, Ruth Broome, Kenneth Broome, and Doris Broome Sanders.

After a career as Area Maintenance Supervisor at Hoescht Celanese, he retired in 1989. He was a loving husband and father and a dedicated member of Cherokee Falls Baptist Church, where he served in many leadership positions. He enjoyed a round of golf with his best friends, Bob Earls and Kenneth McCraw, he was an enthusiastic Gamecocks fan, and he took great delight in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 27 at 2 pm at Cherokee Falls Baptist Church with the funeral to follow at 3 pm, conducted by the Rev. Tim Knotts. Entombment to follow at Clingman Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the residence, 1014 S. Rutherford St., Blacksburg.
