Dr. Brian Alexander Simpson

Dr. Brian Alexander Simpson, age 66, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2016, surrounded by his family. Born in New York City on September 1, 1949, he was the son of the late Garry Chalmers and Kathleen Helen McLean Simpson. Brian grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology at the University of Vermont, he turned his interest in the effect of self-efficacy on test and speech anxiety into a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Northern Illinois University in 1981. His thesis and dissertation represent one of the first such studies of the effectiveness of cognitive restructuring and visualization on outcome.

Brian shared his childhood passion for the outdoors and physical activity with his family and friends throughout his life. While Brian loved to hike, bike, backpack, paddle, sail, and ski, it was a love of running that most merged the natural world with the joy of being physically fit and active.

Brian is survived by his wife and soul mate of 37 years, Karen Carney Simpson of Lawndale; three sons, Colin Louis Simpson of Charlotte, NC, Devin John Kyle Simpson of Carrboro, NC, and Sean Cameron Garry Simpson of New York City, NY; a daughter, Shannon Alexis Nagel and husband Tony of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Anthony Frederick Nagel and Garrett John Nagel also of Atlanta; two sisters, Carly Simpson Jolivet of Cleveland, OH, and Robin Simpson Troy of Charlotte, Vermont; and a brother, John Simpson of San Francisco, CA.

The community, family and friends are invited to a visitation at Cecil Burton Funeral Home and Crematory in Shelby, North Carolina, from 11 am to 12 pm, Friday, June 17. A memorial service in which his friends and family will celebrate his life by sharing stories and personal anecdotes will follow the visitation at 12 pm in the Chapel at Cecil Burton.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to a charity of your choice. Brian believed each of us has a responsibility to make the world a better place by caring for all living things including our mother earth.

Cecil M Burton Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family of Dr. Simpson.
