"EARTH and FIRE" Pottery Festival ends July 21, 2017
Jodi Lynn Pottery

The "Earth and Fire" Pottery Fest ends this Friday, July 21 at Southern Arts Society in Kings Mountain. There are 15 Carolina potters selling traditional handmade pottery along with contemporary artistic creations. Many pieces are for everyday use around the home - coffee cups, goblets, casserole dishes, serving platters, vases and bird houses. Some of the pottery has a more "artsy" and whimsical feel to decorate your space or hang on a wall. All the work is either thrown on the pottery wheel, made by the coil method, or formed by hand from a slab of clay. One of the potters in the show, Barry Lockman not only digs his own clay, but uses a wood fired kiln, a method of firing that is sought after by collectors. This process is very labor intensive taking several days to fire the pottery. Several potters use old lace to make a pattern in the wet clay or carve into semi-dry clay making a more expressive statement. There are many forms of pottery to choose from in this show.
