SHELBY - George Gilbert Greene, age 88, of Shelby, NC, passed away August 12, 2017 at his residence on his farm.
Born December 7, 1928 in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Albert Walton Greene and Corene Grigg Greene. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Albert Greene.
Gilbert was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict and of Baptist Faith. He was a lifelong farmer, who finally retired.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Nancy Ellis Greene; three children, George Gilbert Greene, Jr. of Cramerton, Dwight Kelly Greene and wife Holly of Shelby, Nanette Fountain and husband J.R. of Rock Hill, SC; one sister, June Reichle; four brothers, Phillip Greene, Bob Greene, Randall Greene and wife Glenda, Henry Greene and wife Susan. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Matt Greene and wife Ashley, Courtney Fountain, Ben Fountain, Kaley Greene; his first great-granddaughter, due in November; and his beloved plott hound, Dixie.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2017 at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with Rev. Tony Sisk officiating and military honors provided by the Marine Corps League #1164. The family will receive friends after the service.
