Half ton debris removed from First Broad River in Shelby
Dennis used his canoe to ferry tires and garbage around as they made their way down the river.

On September 19th, Boy Scout Troop 118 members, Shelby citizens, and Keep Shelby Beautiful volunteers participated in a First Broad River Clean-Up Event.
Stormwater from the watershed carries garbage from our streets and property through ditches, pipes, and small streams, and deposits it in our rivers. The volunteers jumped into the river and picked up approximately 1,000 pounds of litter, including 16 scrap tires, on the half-mile stretch of river that flows from the Grover Street bridge to Ingles on Highway 74.
This river clean-up event was part of the Public Involvement and Participation goal of the City of Shelby's Phase II Stormwater Permit. This was the second of several events the Stormwater Department is planning for the First Broad River over the coming years. Our goal is to protect the waterways and promote water quality within the City of Shelby. Volunteer service is an important way that anyone can contribute to improving the quality of life in the community.
Thank you Boy Scout Troop 118 members, Shelby citizens, and Keep Shelby Beautiful volunteers!
We will have another event in the spring of 2016. We hope you will join us.
