Hoyt Quattlebaum Bailey

Hoyt Quattlebaum Bailey died peacefully at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby on August 15, after a progressive decline in health. He was surrounded by family, including his beloved dog Charlie.

Mr. Bailey was born at home on April 17, 1927 on Easter Sunday, in Forest City, NC.

He is survived by his daughters, Melanie Knight and Cynthia Buckingham, both of Raleigh; son-inlaw William A. Knight, husband of Melanie; granddaughters Anne Buckingham and Bailey Knight, also of Raleigh; and step grandson William Q. Knight (wife Jessica) of Cary. He is also survived by his sister Georgia DeForge of Hermitage, TN and a host of nieces and nephews, who span multiple generations.

Mr. Bailey was predeceased by his wife Anne Dover Bailey who was the love of his life, parents Hoyt G. and Meta Q. Bailey, and sisters Catherine Parsons, Ruby Price, and Mildred DePugh.

Hoyt Bailey graduated in 1950 from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering, with a Bachelor of Science in Textiles. The rest of his story involving NC State is well known throughout the local community and beyond. To say he was a Wolfpack fan would be an understatement. He was emphatically loyal to his alma mater, and all of its sports teams. His sports passion was football, though he did play baseball at NC State while in college, which he very much enjoyed.

He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Shelby, since the age of twelve, when he joined the church and accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

His employment history in the textile industry began in 1954 at JP Stevens, in Yarn Sales. In 1963, he came to Dover Textiles in Yarn Sales. He later became Executive Vice President. In 1984, he later established DTI Yarn Sales, along with partners Tony Izzi, Jr. and Nancy Teasley Moore.
