Jean Marie Gettys Bettis

Jean Marie Gettys Bettis, 84, our dear mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother, died Sunday, February 22, 2014 at Hospice at Wendover
surrounded by her family.

Born in Rutherford County March 21, 1930, Jean was the daughter of the late
Claude and Mittie Mae Mattie Cornwell Gettys. She was the granddaughter of
the late George and Julia Gold Cornwell and Plato and Amanda Stroud Gettys.

A 1947 graduate of Shelby High School, Jean attended Shelby Business College
and after brief periods of employment with Shelby Supply and Holland-Breeze
Architects, she joined the Cleveland County Chamber where she remained a
devoted employee for over fifty years.

Jean married Don Bettis of Earl in 1951 and to this union were born Donna,
David, Steve and Hugh. Our mother was kind, patient, quiet, modest,
curious, energetic, practical, determined, intelligent, independent and
quite simply the absolute best. We all adored her beyond words and cannot
imagine our lives without her warm, caring smile. She enjoyed cooking
special, delicious meals for her family, her former job and co-workers,
driving her mustang (too fast), her back row seat at Westview Baptist
Church, shopping, walking, reading mysteries, and solving word puzzles. Our
mother taught by example rather than words.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Don, youngest son, Hugh, and
brother, Carl Gettys. She is survived by her sister, Anne Gettys DuBois of
St. Petersburg, Florida and her brother, Joe Gettys, wife, Nancy and their
family of West Palm Beach, Florida.

Also surviving are daughter, Donna Bettis Hord and husband, Frank; sons,
David and Steve; granddaughter, Stephanie Hord Potts and husband, Darren;
granddaughter, Catherine Marie Hord and lastly, but certainly not least,
their Gigi's pride and joy during her final years, great-granddaughters,
Riley Elizabeth and Kendall Marie Potts.

Special thanks to the staff of Hospice at Wendover for the comfort and
support provided those last fifteen hours and to the staff of Cleveland
Pines for the devotion to and loving care provided for our mother for over
four years- especially Roberta, Pam, Diane, Kelly, Rena, Shirley, Tiffany,
Faye, Crystal, Donnis, Kourtney, LaKendra, Eric and so many others we saw
each day- a heartfelt thanks to all.

Special thanks also to Fannie Mae Bettis, Doris Bettis, Helen Brymer, Bob
and Etta Chadwick, the Cleveland County Chamber, members of Westview Baptist
Church, and the many special friends for all the support, visits, calls,
cards and gifts since that horrible morning of October 5, 2010.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, February
24, 2015 at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Fallston and
at other times will be at the home of Donna and Frank Hord.
