Jerry Edgar Ivester, age 72 died Thursday February 13, 2014 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County on April 16, 1941, he was the son of the late Boyd Decatur and wife Shelley Ivester and Louella Horn Jones and husband J. Y. Jones. Jerry was a lifelong member of Zion Baptist Church and served on several committees. He was a 32nd degree mason and was a member of Shelby Masonic Lodge #744 AF&AM, Scottish Rites Masonic Bodies of Charlotte, Oasis Shrine, Piedmont Shrine, and the Piedmont Pistons. He worked at PPG Industries in the Research Development department for 40 years before retiring. Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan in their sporting events. Jerry was an avid golfer and enjoyed water sports, such as boating and skiing. He played on the church softball league and was an all-around sport fan. When he retired, he and his wife would go on camping trips and travel in their RV with their friends.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sonya Ivester; two daughters, Terri McSwain of Polkville, and Kim Blanton and husband Ronnie of Shelby; six grandchildren, Lauren Smart and husband Clint, Thomas McSwain, Megan Hoyle, Hayley Hoyle, Matthew Blanton and wife Laura, and Heather Blanton; two great grandchildren, Addison Smart and Leeam Blanton; a sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Richard “Dickie” Whisnant of Polkville; several nieces and nephews; and his loyal companion, “ Bear”.
Memorial service will be held on Sunday February 16, 2014 at 2:00pm at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Danny West officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6:00pm until 7:30 pm at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory. A private Burial will be held at a later date.
