John Lee Whetstine, age 77, of Rutherfordton, NC died Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Hospice of Rutherford County.
Born November 13, 1936 in Yancey County, NC, he was the son of the late Frank Whetstine and Lillie Blevins Whetstine.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ophelia Smith Whetstine; sister, Lela Mae Quincey; two great-great grandchildren, McKinesy Lattimore, William Dale Hudson; and son-in-law, Roy Dean White.
Mr. Whetstine was a United States Navy veteran and he attended Forest City Four Square Church.
Survivors include his five sons, William Lawson Hudson, Harold Gene Hudson and wife Kristen, Bobby Lee Hudson and wife Jackie, Jackie Lee Caridas and wife Mary Ann, James Edward Hudson and wife Melissa; five daughters, Sybil Dean White, Patricia Weatherman and husband Bill, Christine Weaver and husband Roger, Leisa Jones and husband Keith, Barbara Alley and husband David; two sisters, Ardith Greene, Faye Stamey; 29 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Harrelson Funeral Chapel, with Reverends Ted Blankenship and Leon Brown officiating. Interment will follow the service at Eternal Hills Memorial Park with military honors provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Harrelson Funeral Home.
