Kathleen Phillips Henry

Kathleen Phillips Henry, 97, passed away peacefully in the home of her daughter on Wednesday, July 20th with family and caregivers by her side. Kathleen was born on January 1, 1919 in Switzer, South Carolina to the late Rex and Betty Phillips.

Kathleen, known as "Mima" to her 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, is fondly remembered by her family for her joyful, optimistic disposition. This kindness remains her legacy and an admirable source of inspiration to her family and friends. Her deep faith allowed her to smile even through her last hours, and her words were always kind. Never one to attract attention to herself, Kathleen had to be pressed to share memories of traveling in the rumble seat of a Model T to attend the Chicago World's Fair in 1933 or venturing by herself on a cross country train trip after her graduation from Shelby High School. Kathleen graduated from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, now known as UNC-Greensboro, where she cultivated a love of writing and literature. She worked in the office at Bost Bakery in Shelby for many years where she made friendships which lasted through her last days. She loved to garden, read, do crossword puzzles, and impressed everyone with her ability to recall the birthdays of all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Kathleen was a member of First Baptist Church for over 55 years where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and was active in the Woman's Missionary Union.

Kathleen is predeceased by her parents; her husband, John Hall Henry, Jr.; her sons, Chuck and David; and two grandchildren, Emily Amyotte and Whitley Mangum.

She is survived by daughters Beth Roberts (John) of Chapel Hill, Amy Mangum (Travis) of Shelby, Julie Falls (Lewis) of Nova Scotia, and Becky Lyon of Vacaville, California.

Following a graveside service, a memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 23 at 10:00 a.m. in Webb Chapel at First Baptist Church in Shelby with visitation to follow in the Ladies' Parlor. Reverend Tony Tench will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the Whitley Mangum Scholarship Fund, 209-A Patton Drive, Shelby, NC 28150 or to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

Cecil M Burton Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family of Mrs. Henry.
