Mary Jarrell Hicks
Mary Jarrell Hicks, age 99, of Hogan Road, Forest City, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2016 at the White Oak Manor of Rutherfordton.
Born on Tuesday, February 20, 1917 in Green County, Virginia, she was a daughter to the late Alphonso Jarrell and Edith Malone Jarrell. Mary was a homemaker who was dedicated to her family. She travelled with her husband, Paul, to many places around the world as he served in the Army Air Corps. While living in Taiwan, she and her husband mentored and taught English to two Taiwanese young people who went on to live successful and productive lives in America. She also served in Washington D.C. as a clerk for the National Geographic Magazine. Mary had a heart of kindness and was given to hospitality. She was a longtime member of Floyd's Creek Baptist Church and a member of the Homemakers Club. Mary will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Dewey Hicks and one sister, Rita McDaniel.
Those left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Paula Green and husband, Richard of Clemmons, NC; three grandchildren, Amanda Green and Andrew Green both of Winston-Salem and Wesley Green and wife, Alison of Whitsett, NC. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Floyd's Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Robert Carnell and Reverend Terry Roach officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church.
