Math Academy students sharpen skills at a farmers' market
Rising sixth grade students and student helpers Isaiah and Cameron.

The Foothills Farmers' Market partnered with the Community Math Academy to bring a farmers market to Mount Calvary church, providing a hands on math experience for the students. Students worked in groups to shop for local products, using their math skills to round, estimate, calculate and working together, stay within a budget.
The "purchases" of local products were used by students to create a gift basket that was given to a local agency in our community. The students are given scholarships to attend the Community Math Academy. This service project teaches them the importance of giving back to the community, while practicing a very important life skill. At the graduation on Friday, July 24th all students were given a $4 Market Moola certificate to spend at the Foothills Farmers' Market on Saturday July 25th during the Math Academy Appreciation Day. In addition each student took home their own produce and nutritional information about fresh food.
Produce for the day was provided by the following local farms: Quail Hollow, Dellinger Family Farm, Berry Fields, Greene Family Farm, Knob Creek and Two Wives Vineyard.
