Max Eugene Long



Max Eugene Long, 79, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2014 at Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem.  Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Walter Herbert and Margaret Susan Spake Long.   He is also preceded in death by his wife, Sarah White Long.  Max established Carolina Farm and Garden in the late 1970’s.  He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.  Max was a member of the Number Three Ruritan Club.  He was a member of Number Three Volunteer Fire Department where he served on the board of directors.  He was also a member of the N. C. Poultryman’s Association.  Max loved sports and played catcher for the German Turtles, a minor league team in Germany.  Max served his country honorably in the U. S. Army.

Max is survived by his daughters, Connie Loy and husband Mark from Thomasville, NC and Tammy Whisnant of Shelby; sister, Rachel Smith and husband Ed of Shelby; brothers, Hugh Long and wife Joy of Shelby, Wayne Long and wife Anita of Mocksville; grandchildren, David, Jonathan and Stephen Long, Leah Whisnant, Jae Kwon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, March 14, 2014 at Elizabeth Baptist Church.  Dr. Rit Varriale and Rev. Clint Padgett will be officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00pm on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Cecil M Burton Funeral Home and Crematory.  At other times the family will be at the home of Tammy Whisnant, 1212 West Cabaniss Road, Shelby, NC 28150.
