Mush, Music & Mutts is Two Day Event!

In what has grown to be a Cleveland County tradition of food, arts and canines, the Mush, Music & Mutts Festival is just around the corner, scheduled for Oct. 16-17, 2015.
This year an extra evening of activities has been added to this unique festival: On Friday, Oct. 16, from 6:30-10 p.m., a host of 11 NC craft breweries and cideries will open the festival on Washington Street in Shelby with an additional event named NC Brew Fest, which will be partnered with a Rotary Chili Cook-off. For more information about the Brew Fest and Chili Cook Off, visit clevelandchamber.org/mush-music-mutts-festival.
Activities will resume bright and early at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning. Numerous venues will offer a wide variety of events throughout the day.
The Kids Zone, sponsored and directed by the Uptown Shelby Association, will feature pumpkin painting, children's games, an inflatable castle and slide and a "human hamster wheel." These attractions are sponsored by area businesses, and admission is free.
The Earl Scruggs Center will sponsor a Banjo Petting Zoo on the lawn next to the gift shop/ticket station. The zoo will offer a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience with an instrument. The Earl Scruggs Center will be open for tours 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and will feature a special exhibit about Liver Mush (regular admission fees apply).
The Pet Festival, sponsored and directed by Roll Over Pets, features a popular pet costume contest and parade. "Musical Sit" and other pet games will also be offered, and Norman the Scooter Dog, star of YouTube videos, will perform at 10 a.m. and throughout the festival. The Shelby Police Department will be doing a K9 demonstration at 2:30 p.m.
The Cleveland County Arts Council has a free exhibit of African American Heritage from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The CCAC will also sponsor the wine and beer garden during the festival.
Registration for the Liver Mush eating contest begins at 10 a.m., with the contest slated for 11 a.m. Awards will be given to the top three eaters in this event.
The 5th Annual Little Miss Liver Mush Pageant will be held with contestants ages 0-18 vying for ten titles. Contestants will compete in beauty, sportswear and interview.
A motorcycle Poker Run will be held, with all proceeds going to Guardians of the Children to benefit abused children.
All uptown Shelby restaurants will feature a liver mush special dish on the day of the festival, and the Foothills Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m.-noon at the City Pavilion.
