Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center
        Council on Aging/Senior Center, 100 T.R. Harris Drive, Shelby, NC, will sponsor the following events:
        “Bingo” - Each Monday Night (except holidays). Doors open at 5:30 (no admittance after 7:00pm). Jackpot - 60 People or more $500. 60 People or less $300. Public invited 12 years old and up.     
        “Blood Sugar Screening and Blood Pressure Screening” - Thursday, August 21, 8:00am - 10:00am at Council on Aging.
        “Dine Around” (Alston Bridges Barbecue), located at 620 Grover St., Shelby, NC, Thursday, August 28, 5:00pm. Please call the Senior Center to reserve seating by Tuesday, August 26.
        Coming in September (Shelby Health Fair) - Friday, September 19, 8:00am - 11:00am, at COA/Neal Senior Center. Services include: Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, Height and Weight, Wellness Education, Nurse Counseling, Carolina Healthcare Mobile Mammography and lots more will be offered.  Other information will be posted on our website at nealseniorcenter.org

SOUTH MOUNTAINS STATE PARK EVENTS
       South Mountains State Park, 3001 South Mountains park Avenue, Connelly Springs, NC, has the following Environmental Programs scheduled:
        “NC State Ranger”. What does a Park Ranger do on a day to day basis?  Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 2:00 pm.
        Saturday, August 23: “The 10 Essentials”. What items should you always carry with you when hiking?  Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 pm to learn about the “10 Essentials”. Saturday, August 23: “Black Bears: Majestic Creatures of the Wild”. How dangerous are black bears? Can we coexist? Why are black bears so unique? What should I do if I see a black bear? The program will begin at 2:00pm in the Visitor Center.
        Sunday, 24: “Knot Tying 101”. Knot tying is a fundamental skill for many tasks. Whether you are a beginning climber, backpacker or just want to learn a few knots. Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm.
        Saturday, August 30: “Streamside Hike”. Join a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00am for a streamside hike along the Jacob Fork River. Saturday, August 30: “The 10 Essentials”. What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm to learn about the “10 Essentials”.    
        Sunday, August 31: “The Amazing World of Spiders”. Silk stronger than steel? Join Ranger Waltz at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an informative presentation on spiders.  Participants will have the opportunity to catch and examine spiders that are alive.     
        South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18. We welcome the community to join us for our monthly educational interpretive programs. Call the park office at 828-433-4772 for more information.
Lost Playwrights, Henderson
        Lost Playwrights will meet Saturday, August 23, 2:00pm - 4:00pm, in Kapplan Auditorium of Henderson County Public Library, 301 North Washington  St., Hendersonville, NC. All persons interested in any aspect of theatre or creative writing are invited. There are no dues.
Crouse Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary
        Crouse Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will be having “Singing on The Farm”, 1650 Ramsey Farm Trail, Crouse, NC, August 23, 10:00am - 6:00pm. Entertainment will be Golden Valley Crusaders, Singing Epps Family, Beverly Rhyne, Rock Springs Bluegrass Band, Joyful Noise, and Carolina Harvest. Also appearing: JR. Houser, Two for One Westside Warrior. Concessions will be sold. Suggest donation of $5. Womanless Beauty Pageant (from all EMS, Fire Law Enforcement from around the County will participate) 50/50 Raffle. Christian Bluegrass. Bring your lawnchair.
Casar Masonic Lodge Golf Tournament
        Casar Masonic Lodge will have their 8th Annual Golf Tournament, August 23, 9:00am, check in at 8:00am, at Pine Mountain Golf Course, 2961 Pine Mountain Drive, Connelly Springs, NC 28612. Shotgun Start. Captain’s Choice. Four Man Team, $200 per team entry fee. Prizes: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, longest Drive, and Longest Putt, Closet to Hole (Par 3s). Free golf towels to the First 48 Entrants. Mulligan’s & Tee Busters, $5 each per Member. Lunch provided. This is to support the Masonic Children’s Home and Masonic and Eastern Star Home. Broad River Genealogical Society, Shelby
        The Broad River Genealogical Society, 1145 County Home Road, Shelby, NC (directly across from Putnam Baptist Church), is sponsoring a field trip October 25, to the Hart’s Square Celebration in Catawba County. Tickets will be ordered when they first go on sale for groups on September 1. The cost is $40 per person. In order to get a ticket, the money is needed by August 25. National Alliance on Mental Illness/ Rutherford/Cleveland
        NAMI Rutherford/Cleveland meeting on Thursday, August 28 at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held in the Crawford Building at Rutherford Regional Hospital. Nicholle Karim, a public policy specialist and lobbyist with NAMI-NC, will be speaking about mental health advocacy. Refreshments will follow. The public is welcome.
South Mountain Family Camp, Casar
        South Mountain Family Camp, 142 Mace Road, just outside Casar, NC off Highway 10, invites you to an Old-Fashioned Camp Meeting August 29-31. Under the big pavilion overlooking beautiful South Mountain you’ll be inspired by Evangelist, Dr. Ray Barnwell. Enjoy gospel and bluegrass music and Gospel magic. Feast on hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream and more! It all begins on Friday with “Parables of Christ” at 6:00, Saturday with “Spencer Mountain Quintet” at 5:00, and Sunday with “The Mylon Hayes Family” at 5:00. Peak Resources and Somerset Court, Cherryville
        Please join the Residents of Peak Resources and Somerset Court for their first annual block party, Saturday, September 6, 2:00-4:00. Event will be held at 7615 Dallas Cherryville Highway, Cherryville, NC. There will be shagging to the fifty’s with Tony D. King, Sr. There will also be a cruise in for classic cars sponsored by Keith and Joy Wood. They will be selling raffle tickets, baked goods, drinks and popcorn. There will be games, animal balloons and face painting for the kids. Proceeds will go the needs of the residents.
Pregnancy Resource Center, Cleveland County
        The Pregnancy Resource Center of Cleveland County, Inc. will sponsor “Walk for Life ‘14”, Saturday, Sept. 6, 9:30am - 11:30am, at Bethel Baptist Church. Registration begins at 9:00am. Join them in fun, games, and special activities for the kids. Christian music and free food and drinks. Individual awards for the most money raised. Team awards for each team that raises $1,000 or more. (Please limit team size to no more than 10 members.) Life Outreach Food & Clothing Ministry, Kings Mtn.
        Life of Worship Ministries, 403 Cherokee Street, Kings Mountain, NC, will be having a FREE Food Pantry and Clothes Closet for people in need of food and/or clothes. They are able to come once a month the 1st Wednesday thru the 3rd Wednesdays of each month from 11:00am - 1:00pm. They will need to bring their current ID. A Meal will be served every 4th Wednesday from 11:00 am until 12:30 pm. This month Hot Dogs with homemade Chili and Slaw, Chip, Pork n Beans, Cake and Lemonade, will be served. Donations accepted of cash/check (any amount) non-perishable foods, household and HBA items as well as clean, new or gently used clothes. Currently really low in men’s summer clothes, jeans and shoes. ALWAYS closed on any 5th Wednesday. Volunteers are always welcome!  For more information you may call 704-884-6703.    
Mental Health Association of Cleveland County
        Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets twice a month, with a daytime and evening meeting. The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC).  The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County. Parents Without Partners, Shelby
       PWP meets every Monday night at 7:00 pm. at the Shelby Presbyterian Church for educational programs and at other times as scheduled for monthly social activities including: dances, plays, and concerts. Piecemakers Quilt Guild
        Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10:00am - 12:00pm at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting, visitors and new members are always welcome.
