Cleveland County Memorial Library
The work of artist Carol Gress, "10 - Images of Lingering Social Stigma Associated with Mental Health Issues", will exhibit June 5 through June 30, 2017 at Cleveland County Library System, Main Branch Art Gallery. Carol Gress has a Master's Degree in Nursing but is an artist at heart who has mastered many mediums. Her original medium was fiber art, which she studied at Radford College before becoming a nurse. She has since learned pottery and stained glass and has always been able to draw whatever came to mind. She enjoys using found objects like computer parts in her creations. She lives and creates her art in Shelby, NC.
South Mountains State Park
South Mountains State Park SUMMER KID'S CLUB:
Thursday, June 15, 2017: "Salamanders" - Did you know that salamanders are amphibians? Join park staff at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 2:00 pm to learn more fun facts and participate in salamander collection. Come prepared to get wet.
Thursday, June 22, 2017: "Let's Talk Turkey" - Yelps, purrs, cuts and cackles. Join a Park Ranger and learn about Wild Turkeys in the South Mountains. Participants will learn about characteristics, habitat, populations, life history and vocalizations. Program starts at 2:00 pm at the Visitor Center.

June 17, 2017 until October 14, 2017! In the 1920s, Cleveland County experienced an economic boom and bust, the heyday of the textile mills, the birth of the political engine known as the Shelby Dynasty, and improved education, healthcare, technology, and transportation systems. This area also saw violent disputes over labor rights and the racial inequity of the Jim Crow system in that decade. Visitors will be able to see the dramatic social, economic, and political changes reflected in the clothing, the music, the dances, the slang, and the products of the era. Admission is free!
CC Public Health Safe Sitter® Classes
Safe Sitter® is designed to prepare students grade 6-8 to be safe when they are home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting. The instructor led class is filled with fun games and role play exercises. Students get to practice rescue skills like CPR and choking rescue! Summer classes are available on June 15, July 11 and August 2, 2017. Classes are one day only and $10 includes lunch. Pre-registration is required. Scholarships are available. Volunteers are the Heart of Hospice! Give a piece of your heart and become a trained Hospice Volunteer. For a small amount of time, you can make a BIG difference in someone's life. Hospice training is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hospice care and the services provided to our patients in Cleveland, Gaston, and Lincoln Counties. This course is free! To get credit for the entire course, you will need to attend all days at one of the times offered. Hospice Cleveland County exists to provide high quality skilled compassionate care and support for individuals with a life-limiting illness, their families, and the community, regardless of ability to pay. Shelby Senior Friends Dinner Group
Please feel free to join us the third Thursday of the month at Showmars 5pm for supper and alternating local restaurants the first Friday of the month. Post-Polio Support Group
The Foothills Post-Polio Support Group will hold their meeting on Monday, June 19, 2017 at 6:00pm at the conference room of the Life Enrichment Center of Shelby. The conference room is located at the back of the building. The center is located off Hwy. 18 North on Life Enrichment Blvd., just north of Cornerstone Dentistry. Our program will be given by David Thompson on the partnership of Rotary International in the worldwide fight to eradicate the Polio virus. If you are a polio survivor and would like to attend, we would love to see you there! Feel free to bring a caregiver with you. Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month
On Wednesday, June 21, 2017, people around the world will participate in The Longest Day®, demonstrating love for those affected by Alzheimer's disease and commitment to changing the course of this disease for millions. Whether it's choosing a favorite activity, hosting an event or joining a team, participants will ignite a global conversation about Alzheimer's disease, the brain and other dementias as part of Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month® in June. Held annually on the summer solstice, The Longest Day symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers. This is a day of hope, where participants will engage in their favorite activities - biking, hiking, swimming, playing bridge, knitting and more - to honor a caregiver, someone living with Alzheimer's, or someone they've lost to this devastating disease. Together, participants will raise funds and awareness to advance Alzheimer's Association® care, support and research programs. Southern Raised to perform
Southern Raised, a bluegrass band from Branson, MO and Bruce Hedrick from Mooresville, NC will be in concert at Lowesville Gospel Concerts/Living Word Ministries, 1062 Hwy. 16 South, Stanley (Lowesville) NC, Saturday, June 24, 2017 6:00pm. Cleveland/Lincoln County Rose Society
Rose Bush Rooting Workshop will be held Saturday, June 24, 2017, at 5:00 pm, at the home of JoAnn Ostrander, 3900 Siesta Lane, Maiden, NC. If you have always wanted to know how to root roses, this is the program you will not want to miss. Everyone attending will be able to take home a potted cutting ready to root. Please call and make a reservation so that adequate materials for the workshop will be available. If you are bringing a rose cutting to root, you need to know how to make the proper cutting. Other rose cuttings will be available. A donation of $2.00 will be helpful to cover the cost of supplies. Refreshments will be served. 4th of July Parade, Crouse, NC
The town of Crouse, NC will hold their 25th Annual 4th of July Parade on July 4, 2017 at 4:00pm rain or shine. The number of entries for the event grows each year and this year we hope to exceed the 2016 turnout! Be creative, decorate your entry with a patriotic theme, or use your imagination, and join the fun!
