South Mountains State Park Programs
                6/18 – “Birds of Prey” – Saturday – Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 am and learn about some of the birds of prey found in the South Mountains. You will learn about the distinguishing characteristics of these animals, and find out why they are called birds of prey.
        6/18 – “Animals of the South Mountains” – Saturday – Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center auditorium.
        6/19 – “Tree ID Hike” – Sunday – Join a Park Ranger for a 1.0 mile hike along the Hemlock Nature Trail. Tree identification will be the focus of this hike. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am.

        6/25 – “The 10 Essentials” – Saturday – What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn about the “10 Essentials”.
        6/26 – “Animals of the South Mountains” – Sunday – Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center auditorium.
South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18. We welcome the community to join us for our monthly educational interpretive programs. Call the park office at (828) 433-4772 for more information.

Cleveland County Memorial Library
   Readers of all ages will travel the globe this summer as the Cleveland Memorial Library presents “One World, Many Stories,” during the summer reading program.  Children will explore places from Africa, China , England , Italy , and Japan to Mexico through stories, crafts, music, games, dance, and other activities.  The Summer Reading Program is open to young people, pre-school through 6th grade, with programs, story-hours, reading for prizes and more.  The Summer Reading Program will last six weeks from June 13th to July 28th.  There will be no programs during the week of July 4th to 8th.  No pre-registration is required and all programs are free to the public.  Locations and times are as follows:
   Spangler Branch Library - Lawndale , NC   Mondays 20th and 27th; July 11th, and July 18th.
  Cleveland County Memorial Library – Shelby, NC Thursday June 16th, 23rd, and 30th; July 14th, and July 21st.
  The Cleveland County Memorial Library will offer a program at Township 3 Elementary School in Earl , NC on Fridays, June 17th, 24th; July 15th, and 22nd.
   The times for the programs are 10:00 am – 11:00 am.  Prizes will be awarded for the number of books read in the school age program.

       Summer Schedule for City Park Carrousel and Rotary Train (through August).  Tuesday - Friday 10 AM - 1 PM and 5-8 PM. Saturday 1-6 PM and Sunday 1:30-6 PM. All rides are 50¢. Cleveland County Arts Council

       The Philadelphia Community Organization of Lawndale (PCOL) is in the process of planning our 13th annual Juneteenth celebration which will be held at 165 Schenck Farm Rd., Lawndale, NC on June 18.  The celebration will begin with a parade at 1 p.m. (lineup 12:30 pm) and the festivities starting at 1:30 pm-4 pm. 9th Annual Golf Tournament For

       The 9th Annual Bruce Ward Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, June 18 at Kings Mountain Country Club, Kings Mtn., NC with Shotgun Start at 1:00 pm. Shelby City Park
   Shelby City Park is offering gymnastics clinics this summer.  Classes run Monday through Thursday and include instruction on tumbling, balance beam, bars, rings and tumbl-trak.  Instruction is available for children ages 3 and up.  The weeks are: June 20-23, July 11-14, July 18-21 and August 8-11.  Registration forms are available online at www.cityofshelby.com and at the park. Life Enrichment Center Dementia Program
       Dealing with dementia’s difficult behaviors” will be the focus of the caregiver meeting. The greatest stress for caregivers of people diagnosed with dementia is dealing with difficult behaviors such as agitation and wandering. Caregivers are invited to  a program Tuesday, June 21, at 5:30 p.m. to hear suggestions about preventing those behaviors and what to do if they occur. The meeting is free and open to the public. The program is sponsored by the Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care and will meet at the center at 110 Life Enrichment Blvd., Shelby. The new facility is located off Fallston Road between Teddy and Meekins Law Office and Cornerstone Dental Associates.No reservations are required to attend the meeting. First Baptist Church, Shelby
       On Wednesday, June 22 we are having a Block Party at the church. The time is 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm for ages 4th and 5th graders. Free Hot Dogs and Sno-Cones. There will be Games, Rides and Slides. Location is in the parking lot on Washington St.

Benefit Ride For Keith Price
       A Benefit Ride for Keith Price (cancer patient) will be held at Cliffside Park on Saturday, June 25, 2011. Registration will start at 10 am. Ride will start at 11 am. Single rider is $15.00; doubles $20.00, includes meal. Non riders are welcome!! There will be hot dog plates sold at $5.00 a plate which will include two hot dogs, chips, drink and dessert. There will also be a silent auction so please come on out and help us have a successful day. Directions to Cliffside Park: Take Hwy. 74 to Hwy. 120 exit. Coming from Rutherfordton: take a right off exit. Coming from Shelby: take a left off exit.        Entries Needed for Lattimore Fourth of July Parade The Town of Lattimore is looking for entries for the annual Fourth of July parade. Past entries have included antique cars, horses, ATV’s, tractors, and much more. This year’s parade will be held on the morning of Monday, July 4th. Lattimore Fourth Of July Celebration
       Are you looking for an inexpensive way to celebrate the Fourth of July with the family? Look no further! The town of Lattimore would like to invite you to attend the annual Fourth of July Parade and Celebration on Monday, July 4th. The parade lineup will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the parade march will begin on Towery Road/Oak Drive at 9:00 a.m. Parade entries will include floats, antique cars, horses, tractors, and much more! At the conclusion of the parade, a patriotic program will be presented at the recreation park of Lattimore Baptist Church. The celebration will begin around 10 a.m. and will include the recognition of veterans and entertainment. This year’s featured entertainment is the band After Dark. The Lattimore Baptist Church youth group will be selling biscuits and drinks along the parade route beginning at 8:15 a.m. Biscuits, hotdogs, drinks, and homemade desserts will be sold at the recreation park. All proceeds will go toward funding youth activities such as summer camp. Piecemakers Quilt Guild, Lincolnton, NC
       Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10AM – 12PM at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Room 319, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton.  We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting; visitors & new members are welcome.  Meetings include a business meeting, show-and-tell, and a program related to quilting.  On June 1st we celebrate our 10th anniversary; come join us for a special day. Boys & Girls Club Of CC Annual Benefit
The annual benefit for the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County will be held on Friday, June 17, in Goforth Hall at the Cleveland County Fair Grounds. Everyone is invited. Social time begins at 6 p.m. A few tickets are still available for your choice of a 2011 Ford Fiesta or 2011 Ford Ranger XLT pick up truck. The tickets are $100 each and will be limited to 400. Tickets include dinner for two. You must to present to win a prize other than the car or truck. There will also be an auction for merchandise. Other prizes will be awarded throughout the evening.
