New Exhibits at Cleveland County Memorial Library
The Cleveland County Memorial Library would like to invite you to a new exhibit.
In observance of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War (1861-1865), the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncculture.com) has organized the Freedom, Sacrifice, Memory:  Civil War Sesquicentennial Photography Exhibit to travel the state from April 1, 2011 through spring 2013 as part of its commemoration (www.nccivilwar150.com).
Visitors will see women who served as Confederate spies, well-known Confederate generals, re-enactment images of soldiers and battles, and more.  The battlefield, home front, African Americans, and women all are reflected in the exhibit.  A notebook accompanying the exhibit will offer sketches of the generals, of African Americans fleeing bondage, a woman whose home became a hospital, and other glimpses of lives from that turbulent time.
In observance of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War (1861-1865), the Cleveland County Memorial Library is presenting a number of events open to the public. Following is the schedule:
August 7, Tuesday, 6:30 pm   The movie, Underground Railroad: The William Still Story, will be shown in the large Meeting Room.
August 18, Saturday, 10:00 am   Private Thomas E. Caldwell Camp #31 Sons of Confederate Veterans will present a Living History Camp, Flag Presentation, Uniform Presentation, How to load a rifle and fire, and Weapons Display.  Why should we celebrate the commemoration of the Sesquicentennial of the War Between the States?
August 21, Tuesday, 7:00 pm  In his program, A Cleveland County Citizen Goes to War, author Mark Hughes, uses photographs taken during the Civil War to tell the story of a young Confederate soldier who enlisted in the first unit raised in Cleveland County, NC. Many of the photographs in the program were used in Hughes’ latest book, The New Civil War Handbook: Facts and Photos for Readers of All Ages. Hughes will autograph copies of his books after the program.
August 28, Tuesday, 6:30pm The movie Civil War Ghosts will be shown in the large Meeting Room.  It focuses on paranormal and spiritual activity at three Civil War sites: Gettysburg’s Farnsworth House, occupied by Southern sharpshooters; Mississippi’s McRaven House, a field hospital during the Battle of Vicksburg; and Tennessee’s Chickamauga battlefield.
