He was active in the community, serving on the Kings Mountain Hospital Board and on the Board of Advisors for Bonclarken Conference Center in Flat Rock, North Carolina.

He was a 1947 graduate of Kings Mountain High School. He played the flute in the band in Kings Mountain from the time he was in the fourth grade until he graduated. He was a 1952 graduate of Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration.

He enjoyed tending to his herd of cows on the farm and loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. In later years, he enjoyed spending time on their porch in Kings Mountain with the view of the mountain "Kings Mountain" across the pasture, and the porch at their Flat Rock home at Bonclarken.
