North Carolina's second highest award presented to Community First Media Editor

The prestigious Old North State Award "for dedication and service beyond expectations and excellence" was presented to Banner-News Editor Alan Hodge May 10, 2017 by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.
"I am very appreciative of this award,'' said Hodge, a veteran newspaperman for 20 years and a contributor to the Our State Magazine 28 years. His features in the magazine have included travel and historical stories, book reviews by North Carolina authors, and his popular Our State Quiz which has been published twice in book form.
Hodge said his association with Our State Magazine began in 1989 and he continues to contribute Our State Quiz and features. Over the the years he has freelanced news stories published in various area newspapers and magazines. He was honored for community news reporting by the North Carolina Press Association and North Carolina Press Club with two first place and two second place awards.
In Belmont, Hodge has served a total of 11 years for the Belmont and Mount Holly newspapers, first as editor of the Belmont Banner and currently as editor of the Banner-News. He worked previously as a reporter at the Kings Mountain Herald.
A native of Belmont, his relatives settled on a land grant back in 1773. He loves the area where he and his wife, Sharon Brendle Hodge, have lived during 30 years of marriage. Mrs. Hodge is employed by Wells Fargo Bank.
"We take much pride in Alan's award and his accomplishments as a writer and congratulate him on winning the Old North State Award,'' said Banner-News Publisher Greg Ledford.
