Patsy Ann Blanton Shaffer

Mrs. Patsy Ann Blanton Shaffer, age 78 of 509 West Marion Street died on December 20th at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.  She was the oldest daughter of Wilmer “Dad” Blanton and Oneta Colquitt Blanton and was born on June 18, 1936.  She lived in Shelby, NC all her life.  She was of Baptist faith.  She graduated from Shelby Senior High School in the class of 1954 and from Charlotte Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1957 as a R.N.  She worked as the office nurse for Dr. Merrill B. Yeomans, M.D. for 37 years, as a Plant Nurse for Esther Mills, and for Carolina Neurological Association for six years. She retired from Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in 2004.  She was in nursing for 50 years. Besides her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, she loved her family most of all. She was an avid reader and collector. She loved children, nursing, books, music, dogs and the beach. She was a southern lady and loved her country—the American flag always flying from her home. She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Patsy is preceded in death by, her sister Tena Blanton Hardman, her beloved husband Richard “Dick” Shaffer Sr., and infant son and infant daughter. 

 

Mrs. Shaffer is survived by her son, Richard “Rick” Shaffer Jr. and wife Suzanne Shaffer of Shelby, Melanie Calvo and husband Ricardo of  Severna Park, Maryland. She was “NaNa” to her grandchildren who were the joys of her life- Nikki Shaffer, Brooke Shaffer, Richard Nicolas Calvo, and Nathaniel Calvo.  Also surviving is her companion and beloved dog Cocoa who was adopted by her grandson Nathaniel.

 

A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Cecil Burton Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Bob Dills officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.  A private ceremony for immediate family will be held at a later date to release the ashes of her and her late husband as per their final wishes. 

 

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be sent to the Cleveland County Library System’s Friends of the Library, 104 Howie Drive, Shelby NC 28150 or the Cleveland County Humane Society, 1609 East Marion Street, Shelby NC 28150.
