Robert Spurgeon Jones, Sr.

Dr. Robert Spurgeon Jones, Sr., passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at home.  Born in Scotland County, he was the son of the late Joseph Henry and Euphemia Watson Jones.  He was also preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Henry Jones and Dan Jones; and son, Dr. Robert “Bobby” Spurgeon Jones, Jr.

Dr. Jones attended Gardner-Webb College where he played basketball and obtained his undergraduate degree with a Bachelor of Science in 1948 from Wake Forest College.  He graduated in the first four year class of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine in 1954.  He returned to Cleveland County in 1958 to open Jones Family Practice in Shelby where he retired on October 4, 2010 which was his 85th birthday.  He was board certified in family practice his entire career.  Dr. Jones was a long standing member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and chairman of the deacons.  He was a member of Kiwanis for many years and served as president and on the board.  Dr. Jones was an avid golfer and played in many tournaments started by the former professional golfer Bobby Jones to raise money for Syringomyelia which was played in different areas all over the country.  He continued golfing until age 87.  Dr. Jones was responsible for bringing this tournament to the Cleveland Country Club in Shelby in 2010.  He had a love for flying and took jaunts in his Cessna 310.  He was the aviation medical examiner for professional and recreational pilots.  He continued his flying until age 87.  Dr. Jones also loved water skiing and did so until he was 85 years old. 

Dr. Jones is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mabel Sperling Jones; sons, Dr. Stephen Jones and wife Kelly of Shelby and Joseph Henry Jones and wife Julie Jones of Barnwell, SC; daughter-in-law Dr. Marta Jones of Shelby; sister, Lella Jones Darden of Ahoskie, NC; grandchildren Robert Matthew Jones currently of Afghanistan and wife Leigha Angel Jones of Clarksville, TN, Bonnie Marie Jones of Durham, NC, William Jones of Barnwell, SC, Juliette Jones of Barnwell, SC, Natalie Claire Jones of Coats, NC, Caroline Jones Murrell and husband Andrew of Winston Salem, NC.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, February 22, 2014 in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church.  Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park with military rites.  The family will receive friends from 4:30 – 6:00pm on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Cecil M Burton Funeral Home and Crematory.  At other times the family will be at the home.
