Rose Society Annual Rose Show is Sept 30, 2017

I remember when my mother, the late Era Sarratt, used two box tops from Frosted Flakes cereal boxes, along with 50 cents to purchase the beautiful hybrid tea rose called Peace. Now the cost of this beautiful yellow rose is about $40.00 per bush. The Peace rose was developed by a French rose breeder and made popular in the United States after World War II. When this rose arrived at my mother's, it was planted in the edge of our garden along with other perennials my mother grew in the Zoar Community.
My mother spurred my interest in plants and a half acre vegetable garden which was our livelihood. I began growing roses as a hobby in early 1970's and shortly thereafter joined the Cleveland County Rose Society. Lots of my rose bushes have 'frequent road miles' as they have been moved to seven different rose garden locations including Virginia and now home again in Shelby.
I grow a large variety of roses including Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras, Floribundas, Climbers, Shrubs, Hybrid Musks, Chinas, Miniatures and Minifloras. This is a hobby, but you have to be committed to feeding, spraying and watering if you are going to be successful in growing roses. With good luck, some of my roses will be part of the competition at the Annual Rose Show hosted by Cleveland Lincoln County Rose Society September 30, 2017.
There is no registration fee and you do not have to be a member to enter roses. Entries will be accepted from 7-19AM. After judging is complete, the public can view the show from 1:00pm-4:00pm Saturday at the Cleveland County Agricultural Office, 130 South Post Road, Shelby, NC (Hwy 180 South next to Food Lion).
The rose show is the big event of the year for the society which also participates in other area shows and garden tours. This year there will be rose bushes for sale at the show as well as perennial plants. Rose arrangements will be for sale and all 'show table roses' are for sale to the public when the show closes at 4PM Saturday. Be sure to bring your containers to put your cut roses in water.
Our Rose Society's purpose is to promote the rose and to emphasize that, yes, you can raise roses in the Carolinas. For more informaton or a rose show schedule, go to our website: clevelandlincolnrose.com and like us on Facebook: Cleveland Lincoln County Rose Society.
