Sara "Susie" Roberts Mabry

Sara "Susie" Roberts Mabry, age 81, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 25th, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy Houston and Bonnie Smith Roberts; her sister Janice Roberts Honeycutt; her brother Gary Houston Roberts; her husband William Franklin Mabry; and grandson William Paschal Mabry.

Susie was a devoted mother to Susan Mabry Woodard and husband Barney of Asheville, NC; William Franklin Mabry Jr. and wife Joanie of Shelby; Lee Mabry Williams and husband David of Greensboro, NC; and Christopher Hayes Mabry and wife Leigh of Shelby. She was a loving "Grandma" to Sarah Allen Nabors and husband Tyler; Daniel Mabry Allen; Holly Franklin Mabry; Carter Christian Mabry; Elizabeth Drew Mabry; Emily Austin Williams; Jacob Mabry Williams; Christopher Hayes Mabry, II; James Edward Mabry; Great Grandson Ashe Allen Nabors; and many special grand-dogs and great grand-dogs.

She graduated from Shelby High School and attended Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. She was an active lifelong member of Central United Methodist Church. She also attended Blowing Rock Central Methodist Church, and her strong and enduring faith supported her throughout her life. She served as both a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, and for much of her adult life she was a volunteer at the church soup kitchen, the Salvation Army, and the Life Enrichment Center. She was a member of the Junior Charity League and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Susie was an excellent athlete who enjoyed competing (and winning!), especially in golf and tennis. Everyone wanted to be her "partner". She was an avid Duke fan and loved watching basketball games with her family. She enjoyed being outdoors and hiking in the mountains she loved so much. She was fortunate to be able to travel abroad on several occasions, and frequently reminisced about the joy those experiences brought her. Susie was a very social person who always put the interest of others before herself. She had a sweet and caring spirit, leaving a positive impression on everyone she met, and had many lifelong friends from Shelby, Blowing Rock and beyond. Her physical presence will be sorely missed, but she will always live in our hearts.

Memorial service will be held on Monday September 28, 2015 at 1:00pm at Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Danny Leonard and Rev. Craig Langston officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Central United Methodist Church, 200 East Marion Street, Shelby NC 28150, Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby NC 28150, the William Paschal Mabry Memorial Scholarship C/O Gardner-Webb University, PO Box 997 Boiling Springs NC 28017, or the Salvation Army of Shelby 300 N Lafayette Street, Shelby NC 28150.
