Shelby Amateur Radio Club/ARES of Cleveland County to hold Field Day June 23

SHELBY, NC - JUNE 23: Shelby Amateur Radio Club and ARES of Cleveland County (sponsored by the Shelby Amateur Radio Club) will be holding their annual ARRL Field Day on June 23rd at 2PM at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. The group will be operating 24 hours on emergency power to simulate operations during a disaster.
Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of Amateur Radio. This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. There will be opportunities at the field day site allowing newcomers and Shelby Amateur Radio Club (who sponsors the Shelby Hamfest every Labor Day Weekend) has sponsored ARES of Cleveland County for the past 10 years. ARES members volunteer their service to the Emergency Management, Red Cross, Cleveland County Health Department and others without compensation.
While Amateur radio is a hobby, there are many reasons people become licensed amateur radio operators. One reason is that they are interested in radio and electronics and want to experiment. Another reason is because they want to talk around the world. The main reason many amateurs are in the hobby and are allowed to keep their FCC license and frequencies is because of the numerous ways that amateur operators can provide emergency communications and community service.
To learn more about how you can become a licensed amateur radio operator see http://www.arrl.org and to find out how to become a member of ARES of Cleveland County or the Shelby Amateur Radio Club see http://www.clevelandcountyares.org or http://www.shelbyarc.org.
