Turkey Trot an annual tradition for many

It's a Thanksgiving tradition for many families in the area - as much a part of their celebration as gathering around the table to share in the turkey feast. The Ruby C. Hunt YMCA Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run will mark its 19th year on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2016, on the campus of Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs. And as a family-friendly event, it offers something for everyone.
"We have folks coming in from all over the United States, such as those who are coming home for the holiday, and we often see many generations of a family participating together," says race director Shannon Hovis. "Child care and activities are available during the race, and there are also stroller and dog owner race categories. The half-mile fun run is also an opportunity to let younger members of the family take part."
A costume contest adds a touch of humor and fun to the race, Davis says. Participants in previous years have dressed as ears of corn, hunters, pilgrims, a Thanksgiving dinner, and even Elvis.
Nineteen years ago, the first Turkey Trot had 30 participants, Hovis says, while this year, it is anticipated that 1500 people will take part. "It is such a wonderful partnership between Gardner-Webb University, the town of Boiling Springs and the YMCA," Hovis says.
"Another reason why it has become such a tradition with families is that it is held first thing in the morning and by 10 or 10:30 it's all over, and folks can go about the other activities of their Thanksgiving day," Hovis says.
Proceeds from the race go to the "We Build People" Annual Scholarship Fund, which makes YMCA programs and services available to those who cannot afford them.
Early race packet pickup starts on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at the Ruby C. Hunt YMCA from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. The start line and race day packet pick-up is held at the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center of Gardner-Webb University. The Turkey Trot 5K starts at 8:30 a.m., and the Fun Run is at 9:30 a.m.
The cost to participate in the race is $20 for Cleveland County Family YMCA members and $25 for non-members through Nov. 20, and $25 for members and $30 for non-members until registration closes at 8:15 a.m. on race day. A family of four can register for $60 for members and $75 for non-members until Nov. 20. The Kids Fun Run is $10.
