Crouse, N.C. - Crouse Community History and Photo Project is pleased to announce that special guest W. Ted Alexander is scheduled to speak at the March 13, 2018 meeting. Ted's discussion will involve an overall general talk about Preservation North Carolina and how they have protected over 800 historically significant properties throughout NC over the past 80 years. In the presentation, he will discuss our Endangered Properties Program in specific and, through slides, show examples of the different types of properties that they have protected and the different scenarios that have led to their preservation, including some examples in Lincoln County.
A native of Morganton, NC, Ted Alexander is currently the Director of the Western Regional Office of Preservation North Carolina, covering 37 counties, and with an office in Uptown Shelby. He obtained a BA in Political Science from UNC-Charlotte in 1982 and a Master's Degree in Historic Preservation Planning from Cornell University in 1985.
Mr. Alexander has over 37 years of experience in historic preservation and downtown revitalization, starting with a summer internship with the NC SHPO in 1981 through the UNC Institute of Government. He was the Executive Director for Bedford Main Street, Inc. in Bedford, VA for 2 ½ years and the statewide coordinator for the Virginia Main Street program for 2 ½ years.
Ted served for nearly 14 years as Executive Director of Uptown Shelby Association, Inc. He also served as Mayor of Shelby for two terms from 2003-2011. He is currently Treasurer of the Historic Shelby Foundation. He is a past President of the North Carolina Downtown Development Association and a current board member of the North Carolina Rural Development Center. In 2011, Ted received the Robert E. Stipe Professional Award from Preservation North Carolina.
Admission to the March 13, 2018 meeting is free and the public is invited.
