Alfred "Al" Taranto
Alfred "Al" Taranto, 82, of Shelby, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Caromont Regional Hospital in Gastonia.
Born in Passaic, New Jersey, to Gizella Roth and Alfred Taranto, Al grew up surrounded by his close-knit Italian-American family before moving to North Carolina 50 years ago--a place he would proudly call home for the rest of his life.
A lifelong golfer, Al was happiest on the links. Always ready to offer a helping hand or a friendly swing tip, he found joy not only in the game itself but also in the camaraderie it brought. Beyond golf, Al had a passion for drum and bugle corps performances, flying private aircraft, and all things technology. His sharp analytical mind and love of problem-solving made him a natural at turning businesses around and navigating complex negotiations.
Al will be remembered for his intelligence, humor, generosity, and the deep love he held for his family. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Pat Taranto; his brother, Ronald; his son, Alfred, and his wife; his daughter, Susie, and her husband, David; grandchildren, Jonathan (Alison), Matthew, and Tyler; and son-in-law, Les, along with Les's son, Spencer. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Patti.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with a visitation following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland County, P.O. Box 2001, Shelby, NC 28151.

Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is honored to serve the Taranto family.
