The majority within  the scientific community give the age of the earth to be somewhere between 4 and 6 billion years. Give or take an eon or so.  The majority within the biblical community list the same as 6 thousand years. Give or take a century or so. So what gives?
There are 2 trains of thought that allow one to believe the Bible as well as rely on scientific evidence at the same time.
God could have simply created the earth from elements and particles that had already been in existence for 4 to 6 billion years. Give or take an eon or so. For example, it would be the same as if you cut down a one hundred year old tree in order to build a new kitchen table top - I’m using this example because my wife is after me about that. If, or I should say when I complete the project, and someone asks me how old the table top is, I would be correct in saying that it is both days old and at the same time one hundred years old.
The other explanation is that the scientific community is absolutely correct in dating our planet as billions of years old.  And guess what? The Bible allows for that as well.
Genesis 1:1 states that, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”  It is not until verse 3 - a possible gap of 4 to 6 billion years - where it says that God created on earth what remains in existence to this day.
God is a creator. He has been for all of eternity.  It takes a preponderate attitude on our part to think that God did absolutely nothing until He decided to create earth and mankind just a mere 6000 years ago. Anything could have taken place before man’s recorded history.
