Did your grandfather always tell you about that famous ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary War? Now there's a way to verify that information and find out the real facts behind the family stories. On Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, Cleveland County Memorial Library (CCML) is hosting a Daughters of the American Revolution/Sons of the American Revolution (DAR/SAR) workshop. The workshop will take place in the CCML Plaster Meeting Room from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
"This is the sixth year that we have hosted an event like this," says Donna Bridges, a CCML Library Clerk who specializes in genealogy and local history. "We welcome anyone who thinks they may have a Revolutionary War ancestor."
Bridges says the workshop will provide guidance even for those who have never done any kind of geneological research before.
"Those who are interested can just come to the workshop, and we will provide them with all of the information they need to get started on finding out about their family background," says Bridges.
Presenters for the workshop include Rebecca Higgins, Dolores Ashworth and Greg Payseur. Higgins and Ashworth represent the Benjamin Cleveland Chapter of the DAR, and Payseur represents the Battle of Kings Mountain Chapter of the SAR. The Colonel Frederick Hambright and Flint Hill chapters of the DAR will also be represented.
The DAR is a membership service organization for women who are directly descended from a person involved in the Revolutionary War. The non-profit group promotes historic preservation, education and patriotism.
The SAR is a society of male descendants of people who served in the American Revolutionary War or who contributed to establishing the independence of the United States. It is dedicated to upholding American ideals and traditions and to protecting the Constitution of the United States.
"We do ask that people pre-register at the front desk of the library," says Bridges. "It will be helpful if participants can bring their own laptop computers, since we have only a few available. Also, if people can bring any previous notes or family tree information, these will aid us in our research."
Light refreshments will be served.
