Dorothy C. Grigg


CHARLOTTE -- Dorothy C. Grigg, age 93, passed away on May 18, 2016 at the
Novant Health Center, surrounded by family.
A native of Shelby, she was the daughter of the late Edith Whisnant Grigg and
J. Horace Grigg, longtime superintendent of the Cleveland County public schools.
She was the granddaughter of the late Ellen Smith and Dr. W. T. Grigg of Lawndale.
Dorothy was a graduate of the Womens' College of the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro. Before retiring to the Aldersgate Retirement Community
in Charlotte she served with distinction for many years as Chief Cataloguer and
Branch Head for the State of North Carolina Library in Raleigh where she
designed a now widely used catalogue system known as the "Grigg System".
Dorothy was a kind and caring lady, possessing a quick wit and a keen sense
of humor. She was an avid reader and gardener, lover of animals and, in her
earlier years, an enthusiastic worldwide traveler and member of the East Africa
Wildlife Society. She was especially proud of her Cleveland County heritage.
She is survived by cousins: Marvin A. Grigg of Denver, N.C.; William H.
Grigg and wife, Kathryn, of Charlotte; Claud M. Grigg and wife, Katherine, of
Charlotte; David L. Grigg and wife Margaret, of Albemarle; James Overholser and
wife, Kathy, of Roanoke,Virginia; and Linda O. Parks and husband Darrell, of
Asheboro; and John Roberts of Santa Cruz, California.
A graveside service was conducted on Wednesday, May 25, at 2:00 pm at
Sunset Cemetery.
