Dr. Gary L. Chandler

Dr. Gary L. Chandler of Shelby died January 29, 2011 at Carolina’s Medical Center.

He was born in Fayetteville, N.C. the son of the late Joe B. and Jean N. Chandler. Gary

obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Appalachian State University and his doctorate

degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. All degrees were in Physical Education and

Health. Gary loved being an educator. He taught at Massey Hill Junior High in Fayetteville; Arkansas

State University; Gardner-Webb University and Cleveland Community College (adjunct). Gary published

a number of articles on physical education as well as writing grants for the Fifth Grade Outdoor

Education equipment for Shelby City Schools and Gardner-Webb University and Gardner-Webb

University Alpine Tower Facility. He also received a state award for raising money for the American

Heart Association. His love of the mountains, back-packing and canoeing were shared with students,

friends as well as family. The Smokey Mountains, Table Rock and the Appalachian Trail were three of his

favorite destinations.

Gary was preceded in death by his sister, Dr. Josephine C. Holcomb; his brothers, Joe B. and

Mark D. Chandler; a nephew, Joseph Chandler; and a niece, Elizabeth Chandler.

He is survived by his wife, Linda T. Chandler and son, Alex G. Chandler, Gaffney, S.C. , loving

nieces and husbands, Valerie and Winston Warriner, Herndon, VA.; Glenda and Dr. John Anderson,

Nashville, TN.; Diane and Art Raine, Salisbury, MD. ; niece J. Amanda Willett and nephew Chris

Chandler; great-nephews and nieces, William and Elliott Warriner, Michael, Chris, and David Anderson,

Josephine and Ford Raine, Pam and Katie Chandler.

He was a loving husband to Linda and loving father to Alex. He volunteered at and loved

his church and church family at Central United Methodist Church as well as Grace Emmaus. The family

is very grateful for all the love, support and prayers during this difficult time. Gary was a wonderful,

giving friend and will be missed by many.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association and Central

United Methodist Church Camp Scholarship Fund.

The Memorial Service will take place Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at Central United

Methodist Church and visitation hours will follow the service 7:00-8:30 in the sanctuary.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Cecil Burton Funeral Home and Crematory.
