Floyd Abel Queen Jr.,

Floyd Abel Queen Jr.,

Floyd Abel Queen Jr., 82, of Shelby, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026, at home, where he was surrounded by his family. Floyd was born on September 22, 1943, to the late Floyd Sr. and Johnnie Morehead Queen. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1961. After high school, he attended Gardner-Webb Junior College for one year. Floyd served in the Air National Guard from 1964 to 1970 as an engine mechanic. He then worked for his father-in-law, Jim Tessneer, for several years on the family's dairy farm. He later worked at Wilson Tree Company and at Eaton Corporation for 23 years. In his retirement, he worked with his wife, Carolyn, at the florist they owned. He later took an interest in woodworking and craft shows, traveling around to share his love of scrollwork.

Floyd was of the Christian faith and a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, where he attended for over 70 years. During his tenure, Floyd served as Financial Secretary and Treasurer for over 30 years, Church Host, and Deacon. Floyd continued the tradition his dad started of handing out candy to the children of Poplar Springs every Wednesday night. Many of the children at church referred to him as the "Candyman." Floyd was also a member of Gideons International for over 30 years and the Emmanuel Emmaus community for several years.

Floyd served as a volunteer firefighter with the Shanghai Volunteer Fire Department for 64 years. He served in many roles, including Captain, Assistant Chief, and Treasurer, the latter for 30 years. One of Floyd's greatest joys was having all three of his sons and one of his grandsons in the fire service.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and brother Charles Queen.

Floyd is survived by his sons Robert (Connie), Jeff (Amber), and Jimmy (Leslie), all of Shelby. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Rachel Hogston (Austin), Jared Queen (Brooklyn), Adam Queen, and Caleb Queen, along with his great-grandchildren, Hadley Hogston, Brady Queen, and Caroline Hogston. He also leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 16, 2026, in the Family Life Center of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. The funeral will be at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary with Pastor Aaron Hinton and Rev. Tim Trexler officiating. Burial will be immediately following the funeral in the church cemetery with military honors.
