Gene Fred Toney, 77, of Sunshine, died Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

Gene was born on Monday, July 18, 1949. He was the son of the late Fred and Ethel Earley Toney, and was also preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Toney. Gene was a charter member of Ross Hill Baptist Church, and remained faithful to the church over the years. He was known for his lively sense of humor that kept people laughing. He and Charlene shared many good times fishing on the lakes.

He is survived by his wife and loving caregiver for many years, Charlene Toney; his sons, Chad Toney and his wife Amanda of Rutherfordton, and Heath Toney and his wife Lori of Gaffney, SC; his stepson, Chris Grayson of the home; his sister, Cheryl White and her husband Tommy of Bellwood; his brother, Gary Toney and his wife Imelda of Shelby; his sister-in-law Lucille Toney of Sunshine; his grandchildren, Payne, Taylor, and Kaitlin; 2 great grandchildren; and a special caregiver, Misty Whitaker.

The Funeral was conducted at 3:00 pm Monday, August 10, 2026 at Ross Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Josh Russell officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers are Dwayne Toney, Bryan Cook, Tim Smith, Nathan Edwards, Ryan Bailey, and Chris Grayson.

The Visitation was from 1:00 pm until 2:45 pm Monday at the church prior to the service.
