George H. Norville

George H. Norville, 81, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2023 at Atrium Health of Charlotte, leaving behind his wife Hilda, who was the love of his life. George was born in Rutherford County, NC on February 21, 1942. He was the son of the late Robert Herman and Grace Wilson Norville.

As a member of Sulphur Springs Methodist Church of Shelby, NC he enjoyed helping with events and projects with his church family. George attended Gardner-Webb College. He started Fox Mountain Weavers of Shelby, NC in 1973 and was the proud owner for 40 years. He was most proud of his entrepreneurial endeavors, which were many in number. George enjoyed all sports and in his younger years played several. He loved to travel out West to go fly-fishing with his friends. He also loved to go horseback riding with his friends in Virginia. Gardening was a passion of George's. He found happiness in giving the fruits of his labor to family, friends, and many others. George and Hilda have traveled to six continents and enjoyed seeing the world together.

George was Piedmont Shriner of the year in 1982 and past president in 1986. He was also Past Master of Shelby Masonic Lodge 744 in 1983

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Broadus and Vance Norville, sisters Evelyn Tate, Naomi Norville, Osteen Sanders, and Gail Hogan.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Hilda, along with his sister Mavis N. Turner of Florence, SC and brother Gene Oscar Norville Rock Hill, SC. Also left to cherish his memory are several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and special friends; Dr. Jim Bombenger, Dr. Johnson Kelly and Minka his cat.

George was a wonderful son, loving husband, a great brother and uncle, and loyal and dear friend. His smile, funny personality and caring ways will be missed by all. Family and friends of George will miss him greatly.

A funeral service with full Masonic Rites will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 28, 2023 in the Chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with Rev. Kathy Houser officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM prior to the service. Private burial will be held at Sulphur Springs Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford: 600 College St. Oxford, NC 27565 or an organization of the donors choice.
