Gerald Donald Washburn, age 92, passed away, September 3, 2022 in Shelby, NC. Born in Cleveland County on August 4, 1930, Gerald was a resident of Terra Bella of Shelby. Gerald was the son of the late D. Purvis Washburn and Edna Wright Washburn. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Elvira Bellomo Washburn, his brother Harry Eugene Washburn, Sr., wife Betty, as well as, his brother-in-law, Walter Giles.

Gerald graduated from Lattimore High School in 1948, attended Gardner-Webb University, until transferring to NC State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He went on to continue his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studying business. Gerald had a successful working career for Aetna Insurance Agency in Herndon, Virginia as an Area Claims Adjuster Manager and retired after many years of service. He was a proud Veteran of the Korean War, serving prior to the ceasefire and he was honored with the Korean Service Medal with Two Bronze Service Stars, The United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, as well as, the National Defense Service Medal.

Gerald is survived by his brother, DP Washburn, wife Lin of Shelby, NC, as well as, his sister, Evelyn Giles of Raleigh, NC. Also left to cherish his memory, are many loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 11:00AM Saturday, September 10, 2022 at Ascension Lutheran Church of Shelby with Rev. Kris Kramer officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30AM - 11:00AM in the fellowship hall prior to the service. Inurnment with full military honors will follow the service in the cemetery of Double Springs Baptist Church.
