Glenn Richard Rhoney

Glenn Richard Rhoney

On Friday evening, August 26, 2022, surrounded by family in his home, Glenn Richard Rhoney, of Vale, entered peacefully into the arms of Our Lord. You never would have known he was nearly 83 years old; we always said it was attributed to his clean living.

Glenn was born on September 28, 1939, to Boyd and Catherine Rhoney in Cleveland County. After graduating from Fred T. Foard High School in 1957 and attending CVCC for textiles studies, he married Phyllis Whitener and was a faithful and loving husband and caregiver for 47 years until her passing. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, as well as three brothers: Gerald, Jackie, and Larry Rhoney.
Glenn worked at Cooksville Hosiery Mill for 50 years, while also being President of the Catawba Valley Hosiery Association and a volunteer firefighter. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Glenn loved his church, Ebenezer United Methodist, serving on the finance committee and United Methodist Men, while also being an usher and lay leader, and loved to hear his daughter Sandra play piano on Sunday mornings.

Glenn was an avid hunter, making trips out West and proudly displaying his deer, elk, and moose in his home - even getting a turkey last year in his own backyard. He also enjoyed camping for years and had a permanent campsite he enjoyed with his wife and granddaughter. Glenn loved taking trips and going out to dinner (or as he would say, "supper") with his partner, Louise, who always brought a smile to his face for the last 17 years.
Papaw loved sweets and thought "you always needed something sweet" after a meal. One of his grandchildren's favorite memories was how he sent them home with a bag of candy on Sunday after family dinner. Even in his later years, he was concerned about remembering cards and money for their birthdays and loved playing with their children.

Glenn was meticulous and tidy and wrote notes as to not forget anything. He was thoughtful and sweet and funny and noble. Most of all, he loved the Lord and his family and was a great example for us all.

He is survived by his partner Louise Bowman of Hickory and her family; two children, Sandra Towery and husband Andy of Vale (the home) and Jeffrey Rhoney of Asheville; six grandchildren: Brooke Delk (Joe) of Lenoir, Garrett Johnson (Jessica) of Valdese, Andrew Towery (Kiersten) of Vale, Kristie DeMarco (Michael) of Virginia Beach, Jason Rhoney (Angela) of Dudley Shoals, and Travis Rhoney (Jennifer) of Stuttgart, Germany; great-grandchildren: Pepper and Jasper Delk, Kase and Owen Johnson, Presley Towery, Jacob Rhoney, Ava Rhoney, and Rylie Garrison; brother Bill Rhoney and sister Annette Hull (Leonard), both of Vale; daughters-in-law Kelly and Tracie; son-in-law Mike, and numerous extended family members.
The family will receive friends at Ebenezer United Methodist Church on Thursday, September 1 from 2-3:30 pm, followed by funeral (8840 Cooksville Rd. Vale). Officiating will be the Rev. Allen Boliek. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials can be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church or Carolina Caring Hospice, which provided amazing care to Glenn.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home & Cremation Center.
