Gordon Elmer Smart
Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Kings Mountain Hospice House in Kings Mountain. Mr. Smart was born in Cleveland County, on June 29, 1918, to the late John Samuel Smart and Cecilia Virginia Denton Smart. He was salutatorian of his graduating class at Polkville High School. Mr. Smart retired from Cleveland Container Corporation and was a member of Polkville Ruritan Club and Oak Grove United Methodist Church for seventy-six years. A lover of music, he sang with different groups over the years including a quartet on Spartanburg Radio in his younger years, Happy Notes and Palm Tree Men's Chorus. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Martha Louise Lawson Smart; son Gordon Eugene Smart; three brothers, Carl Smart, Everett Smart, and Grady Smart; two sisters, Mary Jane Clark and an infant sister. He is survived by son, Steve Smart and wife Jane of Gaffney, SC; daughter, Pat Bowen and husband Randell of Shelby; daughter-in-law, Troyce McSwain of Mooresboro; six grandchildren, Michael Smart, Roxanne Downey, David Bowen, Tracie Wray, Stevie Smart, and Stacy Smart; seven great granddaughters, Danielle Gurthrie, Megan Wray, Amber Wray, Sarah Bowen, Ashley Downey, Bridgett Payne and Michelle Fowler and great great grandson, Joshua Guthrie. Visitation: 6:30 to 8:30 pm Sunday at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston. At other times the family will be at the home of Pat and Randell Bowen, 528 Forrest Ridge Drive, Shelby.
