Horace "Elam" Scruggs, 72, of Shelby went home to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his family on September 11, 2023.

He was born in Cleveland County on June 11, 1951 to Maida Greene Scruggs and the late James Horace Scruggs.

Elam will forever be remembered for his dedication to his family. He was a master welder and fabricator. Elam had a great love of music and was an accomplished guitarist. He enjoyed being an active member of Flint Hill Baptist Church, where he enjoyed the fellowship and looked forward to learning. Elam took great pride in his garden and sharing the fruits of his labor with many throughout the community. His family will forever cherish his memory.

In addition to his mother, Elam leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 38 years, Susan Hamrick Scruggs; daughter, Paula Richards (Billy); sons, Mark Scruggs (Amy), Greg Kennedy; daughter, Leanne Russ (Kenny); grandchildren, Colby Richards, Chloe Richards, Caden Richards, Anna Ashley and Cora Russ.

In addition to his father, Elam was preceded in death by his brother, James Hal Scruggs.

There will be a visitation in the sanctuary at Flint Hill Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, NC at 5:30 PM on Thursday, September 14, 2023. A memorial service will begin at 7:00 PM, following the visitation in the sanctuary, with Pastor Shane Kirby officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Scruggs Center or Hospice of Cleveland County.
