Howard Bruce McSwain, 83, of New House Road, Shelby passed away on Friday, July 31, 2026.



Bruce was born on January 9, 1943 in Cleveland County, to the late Coren Hartsell McSwain and Elsie Eddins McSwain. He was retired as an industrial supervisor. Bruce served in the Air Force where he began his lifelong passion of photography. He was an Air Force newspaper staff writer and was a gifted lover of prose. He was an avid gardener and was proud of his grapevines. Bruce was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church.



In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Linda Hoyle McSwain; son-in-law, William "Butch" Piercy; brother, Michael "Mike" McSwain; sister, Catherine Derikart and brother-in-law, Daniel Fink.



He is survived by his daughter, Lynn McSwain Piercy- Abernathy and husband, William of Shelby; two grandchildren, Preslei Piercy and Michael Gantt and wife, Dusty Gantt; one great-grandchild, Elias G. Garcia; two sisters, Rachel Fink of Matthews and Martha Smith of The Villages, Florida; brother-in-law, Frank Derikart of Florence, SC and his beloved cat, Sparkles.



The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home.



A private family graveside service will be held at Sandy Plains Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Elisabeth Cothran officiating.
