Jennifer "Jenny" Fortenberry Peterson, 73, of Shelby, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the Wendover Hospice House in Shelby.

She was born on January 4, 1953, in Lincoln County and was a daughter of the late Harvey Franklin Fortenberry and Mary Cook Fortenberry. Jenny was a faithful member of Landmark Baptist Church. She also served as a member of the Sister by String Prayer Shaw Ministry, sang in the choir, and participated in Hearts of Missions. Her faith was not simply something she spoke about, but something she lived each day through her compassion, her service, and her encouragement to others. She found joy in being part of church life and in using her gifts to uplift those around her. A gifted homemaker, Jenny loved cooking, baking, and putting up fresh vegetables. She was also an avid sports fan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Don Blanton.

She was married for 51 wonderful years to her husband, James "Jim" Dale Peterson, and their long marriage was a true example of love, loyalty, and devotion. She deeply loved her son, Tyler Peterson, and his wife, Carmen, of Shelby, and she was especially proud to be GiGi to her beloved granddaughter, Brinleigh. Jenny is also survived by her brother, Jeff Fortenberry of Casar; sister, Beth Blanton of Shelby and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at 2:00pm at Landmark Baptist Church with Rev. Allen Davis officiating.

The family will greet friends following the service.

Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Fallston.
