John D. Hunnicutt

Rev. John D. Hunnicutt of Shelby passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2011.  He was born in Rutherford County on August 7, 1923 to the late Manning and Nina Dameron Hunnicutt.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Ella Lee Brooks.

He served during World War II in the armed forces as a paratrooper.  He was a retired auto upholsterer and owner of Hunnicutt Auto Trim. In addition, he was a retired pastor of Temple Baptist Church following fifty years of faithful service.

He is survived by his devoted wife of almost sixty-six years, Dorcas Tesner Hunnicutt; two sons and daughter in laws, Bobby and Jan Hunnnicutt of Ellenboro and Barry and Patti Hunnicutt of Shelby; three grandsons, Travis Hunnicutt (Cyndi), Jeremy Walker and Zachary Hunnicutt; five “princess” granddaughters, Tonya Wiley (David), Tara Calton (Tim), Emily Clary (Wesley), Hayley Suttle and Rachel Hunnicutt; Sixteen great-grandchildren; brother, Manning Honeycutt, Jr.; and two sisters, Frances Toney and Dorothy Lail.

John was a humble man who truly practiced the word of God each day.  Being a papaw to his grandchildren was his greatest honor and each grandchild will always cherish fond memories of time spent with their papaw. On his behalf, let it be said, “This is the day the Lord hath made!”
