Joseph P Hardin


 Joseph P Hardin, 85, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Hospice of Wendover.  He was the son of the late William David and Bessie Griffin Hardin.  Also preceding him in death were three brothers and six sisters.  Mr. Hardin served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.  He earned several ribbons and medals, the Navy Good Conduct Medal with two bronze stars, the Korean Service Medal with one silver and two bronze stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.  After discharge from the Navy, he stayed on the West Coast, working for Safeway Stores as meat department manager for the Southern California Division.  After his first wife’s passing, Mr. Hardin moved back to Shelby in 1980 where he met his wife of 31 years, Hazel Harmon Hardin.  He continued his work as a butcher at Ora Market in the Shelby Farmer’s Market.  He was a member of the Kings Mountain Lions Club and remained active after serving as president twice in Kings Mountain.   Mr. Hardin was an active member at El Bethel United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent, chairman of finance, and on the Board of Trustees and the Administrative Board.

Mr. Hardin is survived by his loving wife Hazel Harmon Hardin and many loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, May 20, 2011 at El Bethel United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 prior to the service in the church sanctuary.  Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.
