Mary Ann Putnam Smith, 85, of Shelby, passed away Wednesday September 2, 2026 at the Wendover Hospice House in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Seth Putnam and Bessie Lee Montgomery Putnam born January 2, 1941.

Mary worked for many years as a Lunchroom Server at Crest Middle School. She loved to play bingo, and yardwork.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Lenoard Edwin Smith; her brothers, Bobby Putnam, Roy Putnam, Tommy Putnam; and sisters, Martha Brendle, and Betty Ledbetter.

Survivors are her children, Julie Owens, Lee Smith, Dianne Day, all of Cleveland County; brothers, Boyd Putnam, and Dan Putnam; grandchildren, Christina Owens, David Owens, Frances Owens, Jason Day (Gena), and Renea Bowen (Victor); great-grandchildren, Jasmine Teseniar, Dalton Owens, Marcus Teseniar, Brayden Camp, Jayden Camp, Fiona Owens, Chris Owens III, Greta Bowen, Wyatt Bowen, Jay Lynn Day, Kaley Burleson and Caleb Burleson.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 in the Cecil M. Burton Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Sunset Cemetery.
